The International Physics Olympiad is an international competition for secondary school students whose interest in physics extends beyond the classroom. National elimination rounds involving a multi-stage selection and training process are held to determine the five most promising new talents, who then go on to participate in the International Olympiad.

The IPhO is held in a different country each year. Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein have been selected to host the event in 2016.
